His involvement in auto racing started years ago when he competed in multiple regional and national go-karting events and made it to victory lane a few times. In his free time, Darrell enjoys watching competitive racing and spending time with his wife and children.
Darrell and his son Riley enjoyed taking in the sights and sounds of Daytona International Raceway this past Sunday! Here is a day in the life of Darrell and Riley at the famed speedway:
Darrell and Riley arrived to the Great American Race bright and early! They started their morning with an exclusive VIP tour of the No. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS hauler where they learned the ins and outs of how the No. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet is transported each week as well as how the back of the transporter is transformed into a work and office space for the team. They were even able to step inside of crew chief Alan Gustafson’s office area while also seeing the back up car on the second level!
After their first VIP experience of the day, Darrell and Riley couldn’t have been more excited to meet Chase Elliott in person. The father-son duo arrived early and much to their surprise upon arrival they were met with not only one driver, but an impromptu Hendrick Motorsports meet up with Elliott, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. The father-son duo watched as Elliott, Johnson and Gordon discussed race strategy and joked with one another. Chase soon directed his undivided attention to the Platt family where Riley and Darrell were able to take photos, get autographs from Chase and do a short Q&A with the Daytona 500 pole-sitter.
Following their time with Chase, Darrell and Riley were escorted to pit road where they had a chance to see the NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet on the grid minutes before engines fired! They enjoyed the race from the grandstands and had a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
